PRESS RELEASE

Council of the Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester along with the newly formed Deloraine-Winchester Historical Society would like to announce the renaming of the park located at 108 North Railway Avenue East. Many thanks to the DWHS and their vision and dedication in drafting the application under the policy which covers any potential Naming Opportunities Plan.  Council has accepted the name change to “Prairie Sentinels Park” and look forward to a dedication ceremony to be held at a later date.  For many years, grain elevators dotted the landscape along the CP Rail line across the entire breadth of the Community.  At one time there were six elevators within town limits, 2 more at Naples Siding and an additional 8 within the Municipality.  Cost prohibits either locating or moving an existing elevator or construction of a replica, therefore DWHS has proposed dedicating the current park space to a pictorial history of the grain elevators – the Sentinels of the Prairies (so called because they “kept watch” over the prairies) that were once so vital to this community.  Stay tuned for upcoming details.
